Be Fruitful and Useful As Dandelions

I moved to the United States from the Philippines in 2004. Shortly after that I was walking the church property at New Life with my friend. I commented on the beautiful field of mixed flowers. There were bright yellow flowers mixed with fluffy white flowers covering the property. My friend told me these were not flowers, but dandelions--weeds. She went on to say that in the States no one wanted these lovely flowers in their yards.

I picked up one of the wispy white flowers and suddenly the wind blew and the petals scattered into the air. My friend told me this robust weeds has deep roots and was a perennial. Just one of these flowers could produce 2,000 seeds.

Another interesting thing about the dandelion is that although it is considered a weed, it is beneficial both culinary and medicinal. The actual name dandelion was derived from the Greek word “taraxas” meaning remedy.

There are some remarkable similarities between this weed/flower and the Believer. Christians should be deeply rooted in Christ. We should share the remedy for sin through the redeeming blood of the lamb, and we should be casting seeds by the thousands--praying this seed will fall on fertile ground.

The Bible says in 2 Corinthians 9: 8-11 (ESV)

“And God is able to make all grace abound to you, so that having all sufficiency in all things at all times, you may abound in every good work. As it is written, “He has distributed freely, he has given to the poor; his righteousness endures forever.” “He who supplies seed to the sower and bread for food will supply and multiply your seed for sowing and increase the harvest of your righteousness. You will be enriched in every way to be generous in every way, which through us will produce thanksgiving to God.”

The eyes of the world may not see the beauty and value of the dandelion and likewise the remedy we as Believers hold within us can be unappreciated. But just like the dandelion, we must thrive casting seed and bring the remedy of the cross of Christ to the lost.

As spring is upon us and dandelions abound be reminded of this- be fruitful and useful.
